The objectives of the Convention
on Biological Diversity (CBD), signed in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, on
5 June 1992, are the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable
use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits
arising out of the utilisation of genetic resources. In order to reach
its objectives, and in agreement with the Rio
Declaration principles (3-14 June 1992), the CBD promotes cooperation
among Parties by providing information, financial resources to both developing
Countries and Countries with economies in transition, and the transfer
of ecologically compatible technologies.
Italy ratified the CBD by means of Law no.124 on 14 February 1994.
The Convention gives particular emphasis to the concept of sustainability
with regard to both the conservation and protection of natural resources.
It advocates an ecosystem approach, based on the application of appropriate
scientific methodologies respectful to the environment, to reconcile the
concern for economic development with the need for environmental conservation
in the maintenance of natural ecosystem equilibria.
